REPORT : Asters the ambitious Japanese opera
jul.2019
The new artistic director for opera at the NEW NATIONAL THEATRE TOKYO (NNTT), the conductor Kazushi Ono, has pledged a new native work every two years and seems keen that these works be heard beyond Japan.

The first, Asters by Akira Nishimura, commissioned by the NNTT, was premiered on February 17 in the 1,800-seat opera house and given an ambitious four performances that month, all very well attended.

The NNTT clearly hopes that Asters will be the start of a renaissance in Japanese opera and its image internationally.
